nurturemusic.org is an Internet Industry Association (IIA) initiative to highlight ways the internet can support emerging talent. We use this to show regulators, politicians and the established music industry as well as local performers that the internet offers an unprecedented tool for advancing the industry. We want to build community support for new business models. Nurturemusic.org's message is that it's time to focus more on the range of internet options available to musicians for building and engaging with their fan bases, promoting the concerts and monetising their works. The IIA is opposed to piracy. Many of its members rely on the growth of commercially and legally acceptable ways to market music and sell music. There are a range of laws and procedures available to rights holders to enforce their rights. We have doubts about proposals urged on us by MIPI and ARIA to force disconnection of 'alleged' infringers. Not only is it legally dubious, technically suspect and privacy intrusive, it will put off its customer base. Most piracy is due to market failure and failure by record companies to adapt to the new ways in which music is acquired and consumed. We remain committed to other new and lawful means of music distribution. Many of these exist today and available in the US and Europe but are yet to be available to Australians. Nurturemusic.org is our response. The time is ripe for a smarter and more effective approach to promoting music that is sustainable and encourages new and mainstream performers to engage with the opportunities available from the internet. |
